Antique London Street Sign

SOLD

Code: 10556

Dimensions:

H: 24cm (9.4")D: 3cm (1.2")L: 93cm (36.6")

A rare antique vitrolite glass street sign with etched lettering and original surround. This comes complete with its certificate of authenticity from the Corperation of London.

'Catherine Wheel Alley' being one of the narrowest in the City, was named after the Catherine Wheel Pub which stood on the site, and was reputedly the haunt of the notorious highwayman, Dick Turpin!
The sign has suffered some damage over the years and now has a break along the line of the letter 'H' of wheel as seen, but the ends close perfectly when hung. It could easily be repaired with some bonding agent I'm sure, but personally I think it's part of its history.
