A vintage wooden charity collection box, labelled on both sides and asking for donations to 'Help The Oldham Town Mission'.
The side opening flap is fitted with a simple but ingenious lock mechanism, that will only allow it to be opened once the box is turned upside down.
It appears though that somebody who didn't know how to access it, has had to force entry at some stage. But it has then been repaired and once more put back into service.
A nice peice of social history from Oldham.
